Ethiopian Tiki Gelan set a new course record in the 36th Amsterdam ICS Marathon, entailing her compatriot, Eyerusalem Kuma. Koreni Jilila was the pre race favourite to set a new record and she emerged victorious in the Toronto women’s marathon.
Three Ethiopians from and one Kenyan were close at the beginning. At the 30km mark, Tiki suddenly changed gear clocking 2:22:08 and crushing the course record, held by fellow country woman Gete Wami. Tiki slashed Gete’s time by eleven seconds. Eyrusalem Kuma finished runner-up in 2:24:55, a minute earlier from Kenyan Lornah Kiplagat followed by another Ethiopian Genet Getaneh.
The same day in Toronto-Canada Ethiopian marathoners dominated, with the winner Koreni Jelila securing a place in the 2012 London marathon. Koreni and her fellow country woman, Mare Dibaba took the lead from the start and stayed shoulder to shoulder until Koreni decided to step up her pace in the final kilometres. One second short of breaking the record held by Sharon Cherop, Koreni clocked 2:22:43 to win the historical race. Mare Fibnished runner-up in 2:23:25 with Russian Silvia Skorchikov crossing the finishing line third. Both Amsterdam and Toronto winners Tiki Gelan and Koreni Jelila respectively secured their place in 2012 London marathon. The success story week end also brought a medal sweeping Ethiopian marathon team in Turkey. Alemitu Abera led the threesome in 2:27:56 followed by Fatuma Sido and Tsege Gelaw respectively. The winner Alemitu collected 250,000 USD while Fatuma and Tsege each were handed 200,000 and 150,000 Dollar respectively.
