It is one year since the death of Ethiopian all time great footballer the late Mengestu Worku. The legend returned home after two years of serious medical treatment in Bangkok before he died on 16th December 2011 at the age of seventy. A hero of his generation and the best ever Ethiopian football product, Mengestu Worku was one of Africa’s best talents among his generation.
He Joined Saint George FC at the age of 16, the legendary striker played a record 98 times for his country, scoring another record 61 goals. Although it is not know how many he scored he is considered the highest goal scorer in his 14 years of service to his beloved club. Mengestu’s most glorious days were the nation’s cup final in Ethiopia where he led the club to their first and last ever nations’ cup in 1962. Appearing in six nations’ cup finals he is the 7th highest scorer in the history of African nation’s football with ten goals. With numerous professional offers from Italy and French clubs plus Egypt’s Zamalek he refused to stay home and star for the Red “V” Yellow jersey until he hung his boots in 1972. As a coach Mengestu led the Ethiopian national side to its first ever CECAFA championship title in 1987. He was also the last Ethiopian coach to steer the national side to the African nations’ cup final in Libya in 1982. Mengestu was honored by Ethiopian football federation.
