When Liya Gebre-Egziabher started the Great Ethiopian Run all she expected at the end was sore thighs but what happened at the end would leave her pacing back and forth in astonishment.
Her boyfriend, Samamu Feleke, whom she first met on a taxi four years ago without exchanging numbers and then randomly at the exhibition center, was running the race with her when he suddenly handed a camera to a friend and got down on the ground. Unaware of what was happening Liya joined him on the pavement expecting a picture. Instead she got a ring. When she managed to calm down, Liya agreed to marry him and was carried by Samamu the rest of the way to chants of “kiss her,” from the crowd. They finished the race in 1:34.
