After serving the flag carrier the Ethiopian Shipping Lines (ESL) for over 40 years, Ambachew Abraha is leaving his post as of January 1, 2012. Chief Engineer Alemu Ambaye is appointed to head ESL that has now merged with Ethiopian Maritime and Transit Enterprise and Dry Port Services Enterprise to be named as Shipping and Logistics Enterprise.
Ambachew, who at the age of 18 started serving ESL as a cadet, grew to be a chief engineer. He then moved towards management, because in his own words he believes that “managers with engineering background have got a very good insight.” He served ESL as its managing director starting from 1995.
At the reception held on Friday at the Sheraton Addis by the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, its chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi paid a tribute to the ‘Captain of the Industry’ Ambachew Abraha, noting how much the latter has contributed to shipping and trade between Djibouti and Ethiopia.
The new chief of ESL, Alemu Ambaye got his MSc in Maritime Affairs (Shipping Management) from World Maritime University in 2005, in Malmo Sweden. He has served the industry for over 30 years.
