Intercropping is underway in Hetosa woreda, Arsi zone of Oromia state at a cost of four million US dollars, the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said. FAO project coordinator, Fikrie Mulugeta told ENA that the four year market oriented development project is in eight selected woredas has made a lot of progress. Fikrie said ten thousand households have been able to increase their seed yields, develop irrigation and fodder and fatten animals. Over 64,600 quintals of select seeds were also distributed among 43,000 farmers. Meanwhile 247 farmers, who received training in agricultural management and transaction for eight months graduated with certificates. The Project is implemented by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture with the budget secured from Italy. According to the coordinator, encouraging results have been registered in similar project implementation in the zone at a cost of 36 million birr over the last four years.
