Some 79 road projects will be undertaken with about 20 billion birr during the current Ethiopian budget year, the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) said.
Authority Communication Director, Samson Wondimu told ENA that roads covering over 5000-km will be constructed during the reported period through the 4th round road sector development program. The first and second rounds of the program focused on upgrading of roads, Samson said, adding, construction of the stated road projects will be carried out in the third round of program in the 2011/12 fiscal year. Eight road projects covering 665-km will also be finalized, he said adding the projects launched in the previous fiscal year 2010/11 fiscal year include among others, the Shahura-Gelago and Magna-Mechara roads. In addition 30 outstanding road construction projects covering 2,477 kms will also be carried out, he said. The government will cover the cost for implementation of the road projects. Construction of 40-km road linking two woredas in North Shoa Zone, Amhara state with over 11 million birr is also underway, the Menz Mama Woreda road construction project office said. Office Manager, Azenew Chekol said the road connects Menz Mama and Sela Dengay woredas. Construction of the road will be finalized in the coming year. The state roads authority covers the cost for the construction of the road, which created jobs for 250 residents.
