Gabon has stated categorically that it supports its former Foreign Minister
and incumbent Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Dr. Jean Ping, for a second term. ‘Dr. Ping’s candidacy, as submitted by Gabon, enjoys the wholesome support of Gabonese authorities at the highest level,” the Gabonese Ambassador to Ethiopia and AU, Andre William Anguile, told journalists. The Ambassador’s assurance came after media reports alleging that Dr. Ping does not have the backing of his country and may not run for a second term.
South Africa decided to field its former Foreign Minister and current Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to run for the AU chairmanship.
The 54 AU member states will vote by secret ballot at the January Summit in 2012 of the continental organization to elect the AU Commission Chairperson.
