Ethiopian long distance, 800 meter athletes for Olympic trial


Ethiopian athletics federation, in preparation for 2012 London Olympics announces nine men and six women athletes from which the best will  be selected for the final journey. Seven athletes are to battle for a place in the 800 meter men and womens squad bound to London.  
Hoping for a strong comeback from the poor performance in  Beijing  where only  Kenenisa and Trunesh received medals; the Federation is allowing for more preparation for the  battle entitled “Back in to Olympic Glory” in London. Not only 225 athletes but also twenty-five coaches, including  the national team coach Dr Yilma Berta are called in to the big undertaking.
In the Men’s  10,000 meter Olympic gold medalist Kenenisa Bekele, world champion Ibrahim Jeilan, Olympic silver medalist Seleshi Sehin, Ayele Abshero, Azmeraw Bekele, Hunganw mesfin, Bonsa Dadi and Lelisa Disasa posed for the trial while the women’s version led by double gold medalist Trunesh Dibaba, Worknesh Kidane, Meselech Melkamu, Beklaynesh Oljera, , Tigist Kiros and Wude Ayalew. The athlete who surprised world 800 meter record holder David Rudisha in Rieti- Italy, Mohammed Aman may face a strong qualification challenge in the distance from Yilma Gurara, Israel …and Shiferaw Wolde while the women’s short list features national champion Fantu migesso, Emebet Fekadu and Tenaye Lemi. The list for women’s 5000 meter trial spearheads by Olympic gold medalist Meseret Defar along with Genzebe Dibaba, Embet Anteneh, Sule Utura and Azmera Gebru where as the men’s short list includes Dejen Gebremeskel, Tariku bekele, Abera Kuma, Yenew Alamerew, Abayneh Ayele and Yetayal Atnafu.
