Saint Joseph School takes Addis Ababa basketball’s season opening championship title with a full domination of the event. The federation declares that it is striving hard to revive the sport with the youth while at the same time convincing government and private offices to start supporting their own teams.
Organized by the Addis Ababa Basketball Federation in coordination with the national federation under the title “Youth awareness on the Renaissance Dam” the latest tournament brought together eight men’s and three women’s’ sides for a four week tournament that took place at Addis Ababa Multipurpose Mini Stadium. Four sides each in two groups; Challenger and Testies from group “A” Saint Joseph and Cathedral Schools in group “B” got through to the semi final stage where the group winners faced runner-ups for opposite sides. In the semi-final stage Saint Joseph faced Testies who managed to take the lead at half time 38-24 but Saint Joseph rose to a surprise second half comeback to secure cup final place with remarkable 60-45 final score line. Cathedral School’s domination over Challenger was from the very beginning and it stays until the final whistle where Cathedral won 61-48. In the final Saint Joseph beat Cathedral 64-41 with full domination to take title. In the women’s version it was almost one way traffic for the ultimate champion Governmental Houses Agency took the trophy with a big margin of 127-21 over ICS School. The federation also announced a tournament will take place in Jimma under the title of “AbaJifar Hedasse Dam” in two months .
