After the Great Ethiopian Run the only mass participation events organizer in Ethiopia will stage two runs in Semera the capital of the Afar regional state and in Harar city under the “Narrow the Gap to Meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with an Amharic slogan “Yedershayen Ewotalehu” to motivate people to get involved in the cause. The two races will be staged in Afar, Semera on 15 January 2012 and in Harar on January 29, 2012.
As part of this project Great Ethiopian Run has, over the last four years, strengthened and increased the number of its regional races and organized 10 races out of Addis Ababa focusing on Education of Girls.
Subsequent to that the United Nations in Ethiopia and the Great Ethiopian Run joined forces to raise public awareness on Ethiopia’s progress towards the achievement of the MDGs and to mobilize social advocacy around the importance of achieving all eight goals by the global target date of 2015.
These races are also going to give useful competitive opportunities for young athletes and encourage the community to exercise and adapt to a healthy lifestyle.
More than 5000 participants are expected to take part in these two races including 1000 children and around 90 elite athletes.
