Wude, her sister dominate Spain road race

The Ethiopian up and coming athlete and world bronze medalist Wude Ayalew won the annual Spain-Elgobar road race. Hunegnaw Mesfin finished fourth in the men’s event.

Wude and her little known younger sister took full control of the race past the half distance mark. The key movement came with the clock reading 13:20 when the 2009 World 10,000m bronze medalist Wude Yimer broke away with incredible ease from her younger sister Hiwot and Korikwiang. The 24 year old Wude, one of the 35 world renowned athletes banned from international events thanks to an EAF suspension for not reporting to national team camp preparation for 2012 London Olympic, clocked 22:29 to cover the 6.24 KM distance to finish ahead of younger sister Hiwot Ayalew followed by Kenyan duo Paulina Korikwiang in 22:44 and Priscah Jeplateng. “It was the most challenging race. That my sister was behind me it gave me strength and I stood my ground strong and am happy winning,” said Wude after the race. “My next and most important agenda is to represent Ethiopia in 10,000 meter in 2012 London Olympic,” She added. Kenyans led by 21 year old Paul Tanui swept the men’s 10 km medal table. It was a photo finish between Tanui and Geofrey Kipsang both clocking 32:25 with Geofrey Kiruy third followed by Ethiopian Hunegnaw Mesfin.
