The National Eye Bank of Ethiopia (NEBE) has signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SightLife, a leading eye bank based in US.
NEBE Board of Trustees Chairman, Dr. Abraham Endeshaw and SightLife representative, Jeremy Shuman signed the MoU.
As per the agreement, SightLife would offer capacity building and technical support to NEBE. The support would enable NEBE to extend its outreach.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Abraham said over 500 youth from across Ethiopia have benefited from NEBE’s eye banking service.
Currently, the bank has some 200 corneal transplant tissues it has acquired from donors, he said. So far, more than 7000 people have pledged to donate their cornea to the bank.
The National Eye Bank of Ethiopia-the country’s sole eye bank providing transplant tissue-was established in 2003 in line with a tripartite agreement signed between Ministry of Health, Addis Ababa City Health Bureau and ORBIS International.
