Ethiopian national team head coach Sewnet Bishaw called twenty three players in preparation for the 2013 African Cup of Nations pre qualification campaign against Benin. No player from defending champion Ethiopian Coffee and cup holders Saint George were there as both were engaged in international matches.
Calling in players to start preparation for the first leg of the qualification campaign against Benin at the end of this month was supposed to be a priority for the football federation. Yet now players from Ethiopian Coffee and Saint George are excluded from selection because both sides are engaged in international matches. Twelve players, six apiece from both sides, are not available because they have to play at home three days before the match at Benin. According to head coach Sewnet Bishaw both clubs refused to free up their players for the match. Now they will have to rely on their second string choices. Sewnet Bishaw said during the press conference that he could do nothing about the absences but to continue preparing with what he has at hand. “It is better to have those with full national commitment and I cannot have in my squad players who do not practice with the team,” Sewnet told the press. One participant mentioned that the 2001 premier league champion Electric FC travelled to CECAFA championship leaving home five of its squad members selected to the national team. “Does that mean players are no more obliged to play for the national team or are clubs not obliged to do so?” It sets a good precedent and with serious consequence,” he added.
However MengestuAssefa, Robel Girma, Addis Hensa, Menyahel Teshome, Getaneh Kebede and Dawit Fekadu from Dedebit FC, Michael Gari and Mehari Mena from Harar Brewery, Sisay Bancha, Beyadgelegn Elias and Amele Milkya from Sidama Coffee, Haimanot Addis from Dire Dawa, Asrat Migersa of Electric, Yednekachew Kidane, Aynalem Hailu, Oumed Oukri, Wendmeneh Zerihun from Defense Force, Mulualem Mesfin and G/Michael Yakob from Arbaminch, Shimeles Tegen, Abdurahman Jemal, Ferew Solomon, Derege Mengestu and Fitsum G/Mariam from Mugher Cement are the 26 players Sewnet Bisahw called for the 2013 Nations cup final pre qualification campaign against Benin, a side that boasts two professional players based in England.
