Innovative Jazz artist inspires at Italian Cultural institute

Claudio Filippini a solo jazz pianist gave a free performance to a packed house at the Italian Cultural Institute on Wednesday February 22, 2012.
It is his very first time performing in Ethiopia and Africa. He played original pieces and some covers by George Cables and others to warm applause from the audience who seemed to find what he said as entertaining as what he played.
Born in Pescara, Italy in 1982, Claudio graduated from the conservatory “GB Pergolesi” in Fermo. During his studies he has had the pleasure of meeting musicians like Kenny Barron, George Cables, Enrico Pieranunzi and many others. At 17 he won his first scholarship to Colombia College of music in Chicago followed by another scholarship to the Siena Jazz and Workshop in 2000. Claudio also won first prize at the European competition for solo piano at Yamaha Music Foundation in 2002.
He played at the Umbria Jazz in Perugia, Sweet Rhythm in New York, Jazz at Pearl’s in San Francisco and many others. In 2006 he realized FLATS, a concept that fuses jazz with electronic music and visual art. Then in 2011 he recorded “The Enchanted Garden” for Cam Jazz label.
It is not known when Claudio Filippini is going to be back in Ethiopia for another breathtaking performance but by the look of the response he received, it looks as though he may come back again soon.
The show was organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in its monthly guest artists’ performances.
