To introduce solar powered internet schools in Ethiopia
Samsung, the world’s leading electronics company, launched a new Afropop home theatre system that includes an equalizer for Ethiopia’s traditional songs under the theme ‘Eskista’.
Nigerian music producer and co-founder of Mo’hits record label, Michael Collins aka Don Jazzy unveiled the new product on Thursday March 22, in Capte Town, South Africa at the third Samsung Africa Forum.
Don Jazzy, a celebrity Nigerian musician helped design the Afro POP home theatre system in collaboration with Samsung scientists that design the system.
The new home theater system will now include ‘Eskista’ the Ethiopian traditional music to other popular music including pop, rock, hip-hop among others.
The new Afro Pop Home Theater is especially designed to fit customers in Africa by Samsung’s initiative of Built 4 Africa.
The South Korean electronics giant is also contemplating to introduce solar-powered internet schools in Ethiopia. Currently Samsung’s Internet Schools Programme provides a technology-rich learning and teaching environment to K-12 classrooms across five countries in Africa as a pilot programme; South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan.
The company has recommended its mobile solar-powered Internet school to Ethiopia and other African countries battling with poor electricity supply.
Samsung Africa head, Kwang Kee Park said during his presentation in Cape Town “one of the greatest challenges facing schools in Africa was the lack of electricity supply and the solar-powered Internet school would help solve these problems. With these centres across the continent, we aim to reach 2.5 million learners by 2015”.

The Samsung boss also disclosed that the company had concluded plans to establish the Samsung engineering academy in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya to train home grown electronics and ICT engineers in the countries; adding that the initiative would also boost Research and Development on the African continent.
According to Samsung IT solutions director, Thierry Boulanger the company intends to spread solar-powered boarding schools in rural Africa. “A lot of students in Africa live in the rural areas which creates a boundary for their education, so with these solar schools, we will be able to provide them with classrooms with laptops and access to internet,” Boulanger said. He added that they are currently working with the Africa Development Bank to provide funding for the project.
Managing Director of East Africa for Samsung Robert Ngeru told Capital that Samsung is negotiating with the African Development Bank to finance for the installation of a couple of these mobile internet schools in rural areas of Ethiopia, which he said is one of the most important markets for the product.
He said the solar-powered solution would make uninterrupted Internet-driven learning possible for students in rural communities.
K.K. Park had in 2011 at the second annual Africa Regional Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, said Samsung Electronics planned to double the growth of its African operations to 63 per cent and generate USD 10 billion in the region by 2015.
While reiterating this, he said, “At our very first Africa Forum, in 2010, I announced the plan to grow our business in Africa to USD 10 billion by 2015, as measured by the sales of our partners – and today, I am pleased to announce that we are well on track to meet this objective. This year, not only will we continue to maintain growth in key regions, but so too are focused on targeting growth of 100 per cent in West, East and Southern Africa.”
“Over the next three – four years this growth will be underpinned by a focus on three key premises; Built for Africa research and development; B2B and B2G partnerships supported by key CSR initiatives and of course, growing and strengthening our partner network across Africa to reach our core mission – to inspire the future of Africa!”
At the annual forum the company introduced more products to their already existing ‘Built for Africa’ range. The new line features energy-saving electrical appliances built to withstand high temperatures and power influxes.
The company also introduced a LED flat screen TV which is activated by voice.
