Somalia’s ex-leader Abdullahi Yusuf dies

The first president of Somalia’s Interim Government Abduallhi Yusuf Ahmed, has died aged 77. The ex-warlord was chosen as president by Somalia Parliament set up in 2004 after years of peace talks in Kenya. But he was unable to achieve the goal of bringing peace to Somalia and he stepped down in 2008 after a power struggle. He struggled with health and had been living in the United Arab Emirates since he resigned.
The former president, who is believed to have died of complications from Pneumonia, is said to be popular in his home area of Punltland in northern Somalia. But Yusuf was viewed as a controversial figure in the other parts of Somalia.
