ZTE to establish R&D center in Ethiopia

ZTE, the second-biggest telecom giant in China and current major network provider to Ethio Telecom, has proposed to establish a Research and Development (R&D) Unit in the future ICT Park here for the African market, Debretsion Gebremichael, Information and Communication Technology minister who oversees the ICT Park project, said. “It [ZTE] is dedicated to establish an R&D unit in the ICT Park while Huawei and other Chinese and Indian ICT firms are interested to do the same,” the minister said. “But our major focus is on the Ethiopian diaspora and local players in the ICT sector.”
The ICT Park is being developed behind the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The overall ICT Park project will rest on a 200-ha plot of land, the first phase, which is expected to span three years, is now underway on 91-ha land, according to the minister.
The ambitious project, known as the Technopolis, is being constructed at a total cost of USD 45 million.
