Painter Mulugeta Gebrekidan’s dreamlike state

A painting exhibition by Mulugeta Gebrekidan was opened at Asni Gallery on Friday April 6th . The exhibition features the artist’s new series of paintings depicting his struggle to overcome the challenges he faces to move out of control, to give space to feelings; from mind to heart.
The artist explains that within the realm of emotions, the other challenge for him was to let go all sorts of expectations and fears in order to let himself be one with the painting and experience freedom.
“When I paint I constantly struggle to let the creative energy move me from reality into dreamlike state, making me lose consciousness while witnessing at times the painting emerging on its own and creating itself,” said Mulugeta. He also stated that to paint following your own intuition and instinct is an enjoyable experience. “Throughout my work, I want to share the internal world I navigate in to create a dialogue with myself as well as with the viewer inviting him or her to dive into this sphere without limits,” he said.
Mulugeta Gebrekidan, born in 1970 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is a painter and video artist who graduated from Addis Ababa University’s School of Fine Arts and Design in 1992. He represented Ethiopia at the prestigious DAK’ Art Biennial held in Dakar, Senegal in 2010 with his paintings, installation and performance art.
Mulugeta has exhibited his works in Ethiopia, Germany, Senegal, South Africa and the USA. Currently a studio artist in Addis Ababa, Mulugeta also teaches part-time at Bahir Dar University and works as a graphic designer for GTZ Ethiopia.
The exhibition will stay open to the public until April 28.
