AAU confers Professorship on Dr. Atalay Alem

Addis Ababa University (AAU) said it has conferred an academic rank of Full Professorship on Doctor Atalay Alem of the College of Health Sciences. The university told Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) that the bestowal of the academic rank was primarily based on the achievements and contribution of the conferee in the academic and research arena in addition to his community services. Professor Atalay graduated in 1983 from the Faculty of Medicine of the Addis Ababa University. He worked as a junior medical officer and medical director of Adigrat Hospital following his qualification as a medical doctor. After one year of experience with General Medicine he joined Amanuel Hospital, the only psychiatric hospital in the country, where he gained invaluable knowledge and on the job training for three years. In 1989 he obtained a diploma in psychiatry from Victoria University of Manchester, furthering his training in Clinical Psychiatry. He also obtained PhD in 1997 from Umea University in Sweden. Professor Atalay has authored and co-authored over 94 scientific publications in reputable international and scientific journals. He has served as reviewer and member of the editorial board of various scientific journals and he is currently an Associate Editor of African Journal of Psychiatry, according to the University.
