The second annual Hub of Africa Fashion Week was held in Addis Ababa from April 24th to 27th 2012 at the African Union Conference Center. The event was organized with the cooperation of the African Cotton and Textile Industries Federation and Hub of Africa Fashion Week to present African designers to showcase their work with the theme of eco-fashion. Eco-fashion is part of a global design trend to use environmentally sensitive fabrics and production techniques.
Thirty four African designers made the show a very colorful one. Three awards were given out, the Origin Africa Award, Messe Frankfurt Award and the US Retailer Award. Fikirte Addis won the Origin Africa Award in 2011 Mauritius and this year’s winner was Mahlet Afework aka Mafi. Her achievement will take her to Africa Fashion Week, New York to show case her work. Fikirte Addis from Yefikir design was also invited back to New York.
Doreen Mashika from Zanzibar won both Messe Frankfurt Award which allows the winning designers participate in the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris, France as well as the US Retailer Award. This creates an opportunity for the winning designer to produce a line in 90 days which will then be sold in big department stores based in the US.
