Registration for Great Ethiopian run closes soon

Registration for the 2012 Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Great Ethiopian Run 10Km has once again exceeded expectations with more than 20,000 people registered in the new early registration process that started two weeks ago. Organizers are predicting that registrations will close within the next ten days once the 30,000 limit is reached. Around 35,000 participants are expected on race day once the final batches of places are released.
The success in securing such high registration numbers is both a reflection of the growing popularity of the race and a vindication of the new early registration system which has been introduced this year to curb black-market sales. Coupons have been issued for all race registrants and these will be redeemed for one shirt at a special sport expo being staged in November on the eve of the competition.
Alongside registration for the 10km Great Ethiopian Run race organizers have, this weekend, staged the third edition of the EVERYONE Race in Hawassa. Around 4,000 runners have participated in the race which includes a half-marathon race for the elite athletes, half marathon for fun runners, a 7Km mass race and children’s race.
International interest in all competitions continues to surge. In Hawassa this weekend a number of running tourists from UK, USA, Germany and Italy took part in the race.
Meanwhile the 10Km race that will be held in November which has built its reputation as the biggest road race in Africa is expected to attract entry from more than 500 foreign runners, many running from international charity organizations and Great Ethiopian Run Director Haile Gebrselassie was present at the Hawassa race to welcome guests and give out awards as he will do at the 10km.
