Red Cross and Red Crescent Celebrate 149 years of service

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was celebrated on Tuesday May 8th 2012 at the Addis Ababa City Administration Hall. The annual celebration was held for 149th time globally. The celebration included a walk starting from Arat Kilo to Addis Ababa City Administration Office by Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers, along with the Addis Ababa Police Marching Band.

The celebration was organized under the theme “Youth on the Move” to show that the involvement of young people which has had a significant impact on the organization.

“The involvement of the youth plays a big role in reaching the organizations goal,” said Fantu Tshegaye, Manager at Addis Ababa City Administration Health bureau who was there on behalf of the city mayor.

The day was celebrated with the presence of representatives from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia who sponsored the event, volunteers from different schools, representatives of different hospitals and also board members of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Among the programmed events for the celebration were musical and drama performances by young volunteers and poignant speeches by special guests.

The Addis Ababa Administration Office proudly announced that it has allocated over 1.6 million birr for the Red Cross and Red Crescent for the use of much needed new Ambulances and other essential life saving materials.

“The donation by the Addis Ababa Administrative Office will help significantly. We give a 24 hours ambulance service reaching many in distress, the donation will help us reach more people,” said Taye Berhanu, Addis Ababa Red Cross Board Member.

The Red Cross is an organization that operates without bias of nationality, gender or religion. It started operating in 1863 in Europe, 1875 South America, 1886 is Asia and 1888 in Africa. The organization now has over 230 million members and 147 international societies.
