The United States Embassy in Asmara announced yesterday that it had suspended all visa and non-emergency services for its citizens due to limited staffing. On May 7, the embassy had said that the U.S Embassy in Asmara can provide only emergency services to US citizens in Eritrea due to limited staffing. Contrary to media reports, according to the statement, the US Embassy in Asmara was open and not closing. The embassy said in its statement that it cannot any longer offer non-emergency services, such as passports, consular reports of birth abroad, consular reports of death abroad and notarial services. But the embassy will continue with all other normal diplomatic operations. In addition, the Embassy in Asmara has also suspended visa services due to limited staffing; however, it will shortly announce alternative locations for consular services. According to the statement, U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Eritrea are strongly advised to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). However, citizens without internet access may enroll directly with the US Embassy or Consulate. The enrollments make it easier for the embassy to contact citizens in the event of an emergency.
