Providing a way for producers to break into international markets will contribute to Ethiopia’s chance of becoming a member of World Trade Organization.
According to the third annual workshop themed “Doing business with the UN” held by Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectorial Association (AACCSA) on Tuesday May 29th 2012, the UN provides a platform for that to happen.
The aim of the workshop was to introduce what the United Nation has to offer to business owners who produce goods and services in order for them to break into the international market.
“Upgrading and empowering small businesses to get involved in the international market is one of the things we do, and exposing businesses to the international market will be useful as Ethiopia is planning to be a member of the World Trade Organization,” stated Getachew Regassa, Secretary General of Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectorial Association.
United Nations Global Marketplace (UNGM) is the procurement portal of the UN System which brings together UN procurement staff and the supplier community. The United Nations represents a global market of over USD 14 billion annually for all types of goods and services.
“There are various opportunities to participate in different events if businesses are registered with the UNGM and if they can provide competitive prices and good quality as per the organizations standard,” stated Ebiaho Emafo, Procurement Officer, UN Secretarial Procurement Division.
The UNGM also enables suppliers to keep up-to-date with upcoming tender notices and by subscribing to the tender alert services, to receive relevant business opportunities directly in their e-mail. Additionally the UNGM facilitates the trading of supplier information within the UN system as information is made available to all UN organizations. The UNGM acts as a procurement tool as well to shortlist suppliers for competitive bidding.
