“Lucy” secures place in African Cup

After a heroic 1-0 return leg victory over Tanzania, the Ethiopian national women’s team “Lucy” is warming up for the Women’s nation’s cup final taking place in Equatorial Guinea in September. The 3-1 aggregate victory means Ethiopia’s third appearance in the Women’s nations’ cup final. Popular in supporting Ethiopian football, Tekleberhan Ambaye gives away the foremost prize award of 450,000 Birr to the victorious Lucy team.
It is not only the away result that home fans are happy to unfurl a red carpet welcoming reception at Bole airport, it is about how they managed to feature a wonderful display to win the hearts of the home fans. It’s hard to believe dribbling from Ethiopia’s most expensive player Birtukan G/Kristos, and long shots from striker Shetaye Gemechu. Tanzanian soccer fans even fell in love with Lucy’s master of short and precise passes. It was payback time for a Tanzania team that crushed Lucy out from the 7th nation’s cup final after heartbreaking a 3-1 loss here in Addis Ababa.
Shetaye Gemechu led the strike force with Birtukan and company in the midfield and the defense led by Bezuhan Endale. Abraham T/Haimanot’s  “Lucy” delivered a lot more than home fans expected, thrashing East Africa’s best national women’s team: Tanzania. After two weeks preparation with half hearted facilities and just a single friendly home game against Ghana, Lucy is back home securing a spot to the 8th Women’s Nation’s Cup final in style.
Birtukan’s shocking opener at the first halfcompletely devastated the over confident Tanzania side.  Except a few but costly defensive blunders from skipper Bezuhan in the first half, Lucy performed their best away performance and deservedly came back home after booking a flight to Equatorial Guinea in September 2012 among the continent’s eight elite teams including heavy weights South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana.
