The hotel industry is currently a multi-billion dollar industry in the world employing millions of people. The services that are given in the industry are vital for the development of the industry by creating adequate hospitality to tourists or business people that may visit a certain country. For a country to exploit this resource, it needs to have highly qualified and up to the standard hotel facilities and impeccable service.
The hotel industry in Ethiopia has been developing very fast but there is still a big room for improvement when it comes to the quality of service. There is always the problem of maintaining a certain standard. To create awareness about trained professionals, Hotel Professional Association of Ethiopia held a-two day training on June 21and 22 at Churchill Hotel.
The training focused on the techniques of providing quality customer service in hotels. In addition, different research papers were presented by experienced professionals who have been in the hotel business for a long time.
“Twenty years ago there were less than ten hotels in Addis Ababa, now that number has grown to some 115, with an additional 25 new hotels being constructed right now. This development in this business is booming and there is still demand for more,” said Gebretsadik Hagos, Head of Addis Ababa Culture and Tourism Bureau.
It was stated at the training that in 2011 the number of tourists that visited Addis Ababa was 515,336 generating over 4.5 million birr and this year the six month data shows that over 321,760 tourists have already visited the capital.
“The main problem for the hotel industry is lack of trained and skilled professionals in the area. For this reason the Addis Ababa Culture and Tourism Bureau has budgeted six million birr currently training more than 2,500 people who work in the hotel and tourism area from June 8 to July 7, 2012,” said Gebretsadik.
The training also included discussions around the area of supervision in the hospitality industry and food and beverage sectors.
