The World Bank (WB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are teaming up with a global accountancy association to develop the accounting profession in Ethiopia.

Helen Brand the Chief executive of ACCA said they are bidding on the projects as part of their mission to develop the profession worldwide.

The accountancy association has prior experience working with WB, AfDB and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Helen says ACCA has researched the projects and understands the cultural aspects of working globally.

Helen talked about one program they worked on with the WB,  a cooperation with regional accounting professions to develop practice monitoring, to monitor the quality of accounting firms in sub-Saharan Africa, where ACCA has contracts to work on behalf of the national professions.

“We’re at the same time transferring those technical skills to the national professions so that they can undertake that work themselves in the future,” Helen told Capital.

ACCA recently held a meeting held in Nairobi from 21 to 23 June with themes of economic growth, business opportunities and challenges faced in Africa and globally. ACCA’s 36 strong council had come to the meeting to discuss opportunities and challenges on the continent.

It holds seminars on policy and research they have conducted to make the set global standards in the profession. In this regard it held one such seminar in Addis Ababa this week, June 25, about the role of the profession in emerging economies like Ethiopia to discuss the research and disseminate its findings among its members and interested stakeholders.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is a global accountancy body with over 150 thousand members and 430 thousand students in 170 countries. ACCA was founded in 1904. The association’s aim is to offer business relevant, first choice qualification to people of application and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.
