Horticulture products export earning USD 250 million

The Horticulture Development Agency said it has secured 250 million US dollars in the just ended fiscal year.
Agency Director General Haile-Sellasie Tekiea announced that the revenue was secured from the exported flowers, vegetables and fruits. The revenue exceeded that of last year by 16 percent.
The director said applying 50 percent natural pesticides has enabled to decrease the expenditure and ease the burden of human and environmental impact. He said the agency is providing support for the companies to be competitive at the local and international markets.
The director said the government has given priority to the revenue generated from the sector which has been increasing.
He said the products are mainly exported to Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America. He said some seven foreign companies have engaged in horticulture development on 1050 hectares in the just ended fiscal year.
According to the Director preparation is underway to undertake horticulture development in Bahir Dar, Debre-Berhan, Gondar, Mekelle and Raya localities.
He said the agency has been promoting the horticulture products at various international exhibitions with Ethiopian flower, vegetable and fruit producers and exporters association.
