The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) stated that it has received over 130.6 million birr in revenue this year. ECAA also stated in its end of the year report that it will be certifying Axum, Jimma and Lalibela airports as international airports in the coming year. According to the report, the authority has accomplished the plans set for the budget year of 2012; using only 86 percent of the capital budget which is over 111.2 million birr.
“We gave a lot of attention among other things to aviation security and providing up to date air navigation service this year,” said Endeshaw Yegezu, Air Transport Director.
The authority stated at a meeting held on Tuesday July 24, 2012 that it had faced some challenges such as lack of man power, price rise and lack of experts which attributed to some delays in different projects. Civil Aviation has been holding seminars creating awareness on the topic of air transport accidents to stakeholders at Bahir Dar, Mekele and Dire Dawa international airports.
“To prevent accidents, we are working with the International Civil Aviation Authority’s directive and procedure. Compared to last year the number of accidents has been cut in half,” stated Endeshaw. The authority has also finished 50 percent of the manual for implementation of standards for the airports.
ECAA has given Crew Member Certification to 2,331 airline employees, which includes pilots, technicians and cabin crews. It has also distributed communication navigation equipment’s to eight airports. As part of its next year plan, it will be working towards the expansion of air transport in the country, reducing accidents and improving airports’ standards.
