The Weregenu National Load Despatch Center (NLDC) of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) located around Gerji area was damaged by a fire that broke out on Friday August 8 in the evening.
According to eye witnesses in the area, the fire accident occurred around 9 o’clock  at night and lasted for less than an hour until the Addis Ababa Fire and Disaster Prevention Unit controled the fire.
Following the damage some parts of Addis Ababa were left in the dark for several hours. Capital’s effort to get comments about the power cut and the accident from officials of EEPCo was not fruitful.
The NLDC construction completed in 2010 is the main electric controlling facility. It helps preserve the electrical load throughout the country.
The 20 million Euro computerized facility will help EEPCo better control power flow generated from the stations and substations, using a single central location, Weregenu Substation at Gerji. In times of failure and power interruption, it will be much easier to detect the location and the nature of the problem from this facility.
