Welwalo crowns champion to Ethiopian national league


Ethiopian higher division soccer tournament takes place in Mekele, with six sides joining next season national league fixtures. Welwalo crowns championship title while Biruk GebreAb takes best player of the tournament award.
Twenty seven sides from 11 regions take part in the one month marathon qualification games on three venues and games almost every other day. Sixteen sides out of which four from Addis Ababa, reach the knock out stage then the semi final showdown among four sides although six sides already booked their place in the next season national league fixtures. Welwalo of Tigray region defeat Nefas-silk Lafto Sub city to clinch a cup final place against Addis Ketema Sub-city that won over Setit-Humera. It was dearly anticipated cup final between Addis ketema and Welwalo both coming from their respective regions champion.  Welwalo spearheaded by strong minded Mulgeta Berhane came from a goal down to score two goals thus champion to the season’s first division championship. Taking aloft the trophy with 2-1 score line Welwalo swept all awards including best coach of the tournament. Welwalo’sBirukGebreAb voted best player of the championship while MulugetaBerhane and HayaluTsegaw both from Welwalo finished joint top scorers of the tournament each with six goals. Atakilti Berhe takes best coach of the tournament award. Nefas-Silk Lafto sub-city took the play off third spot along with Fair –Play trophy with 5-3 penalty shoot-out after goal less ninety minutes. Welwalo, Addis Ketema, NefassilkLafto, Setithumera, Awi Zone and Weliso Town join next year Ethiopian national league season.
