Defending champion Saint George, runner-up Dedebit and Electric FC are considered front runners for this year’s Ethiopian Premier League that kicks-off in two weeks.
The record ten time reigning champions kicked-off Italian head coach Danielo despite winning the league title with four points clear. After signing a German head coach, adding three new players to fatten the already star studded side: critics believe Saint George is hottest favorite to retain the title for the eleventh time. Elias Biadegelgn from Sidama Coffee, attacking midfielder Fitsum G/Mariam from Mugher Cement and striker Oumed Oukri from Defense Force; all were acquired by Saint George and all three currently are with the national team,
Saint George also will play in the African champions league and east African club championship and they are expected to sign three or four foreign players. This means they may be unbeatable.
Last season’s runner-up Dedebit, also signed three players that could make a real difference: goal poacher Nigerian Philip Dawzi from Electric, goal keeper Sisay Bancha and fullback Zenebe from Sidama Coffee.
Hailemikael (Kokobe) is the coach. His assistant Negussie was the coach at Defense Force, Banks and Air Force. Dedebit is capable of mounting a serious title challenge.
Electric is also considered tactically sound under Bulgarian head coach Jordan Stoychkov. He is with them for the third season. They signed four new players: attacking mid fielders Abdulkerim from Saint George and Cameroonian Tami from Diredawa Town, striker Birket Yisak from Hawassa and defensive midfielder Aschenaki from Harar Brewery. They are considered to have at least a chance of challenging Saint George and Dedebit.
