With seven sides in two groups Addis Ababa’s 125th Anniversary Cup kicks off today. A 10Km road race in mid October and last year’s City Cup champion Saint George versus a visiting Sudanese side in November are the big events marking the commemoration of the continent’s capital 125th anniversary.
In a dinner party held at Sheraton Addis on Wednesday evening all clubs based in Addis Ababa except Insurance and Water Sport, both new comers to the Premier League, appeared for the draw ceremony with Saint George and last year’s City Cup runner-up Dedebit FC. The 7th Addis Ababa City cup which is being held this time around the 125th Addis Ababa  City anniversary cup brings together four sides in group one under Dedebit, the main seed and the remaining three in group two under main seed Saint George. Group one, dubbed the death group, is comprised of Dedebit, two time City cup champion Saint George, Ethiopian Coffee and Commercial Banks in which Electric, the hot favorite to win the group for it has a single player on the national team while Dedebit has half a dozen players. Nigerian target man Philip Dawzi facing his old club Electric in the group’s second match and currently with Commercial Banks head coach Wubetu Abate against his former club Ethiopian Coffee are the high lights of the group.
Group two brings together defending champion saint George, old rival Defense Force and the only side from the National League Addis Ababa Town football club. Despite having eight players on the National team, the Saint’s newly appointed German head coach Mike Krugger is highly expected to retain the title. The tournament’s opening clash today is Saint George against Defense Force while group two opening match tomorrow features Dedebit against Commercial Banks and Electric faces Ethiopian Coffee under new head coach Tsegaye Kidanemariam. Group matches take place every other day with the championship cup final to take place next Sunday.
