In a build up to the 8th African Women’s’ Soccer Championship Cup final the Ethiopian national side “Lucy” routed visitors Kenya 5-0 in its first ever International friendly. “I hope EFF will do its utmost to organize additional friendly matches as we are likely to encounter strong opponents,” Head coach Abraham T/Haimanot remarked.
The demolition work on the Kenyans started when last season’s Ethiopian Women’s Championship top scorer and best player, Commercial Bank’s Shetaye Gemechu, opened the score line just eight minutes into the first half. Even though the visiting Kenyan side is little known in the competition when compared to” Lucy” who is going for its fourth African Cup Final, one cannot fault the superior performance of Abraham’s squad. Notably, the domination in midfield exhibited by the team surpassed all expectations. Bewildered and completely confused by the wave-after-wave of attack from the home side, a Kenyan defender slotted the ball in to her own net at the 28th minute; then Shetaye back in action again to score the third, twelve minutes in to the break. Back in to the second half it was once again one way traffic, with the visitors glued to their defensive lines while Abraham’s squad pushed further in to the visitors’ territory. As a result, Rehima Zergaw sent home the fourth at the 68th minute. While the visitors were busy praying for the final whistle, Shetaye, out of the blue, volleyed the final goal to seal the match and complete the demolition. It is a moral boosting result, yet it needs another friendly to ensure complete dominance. Lucy has a squad of 22, there is no doubt that the dominant figures of the squad are the No.12 from Commercial Banks and No.6 from Dedebit FC.
