The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) expects a decision on its application for accreditation at the United Nations in November 2012. The commission, which was established in 2008, is shortlisted for accreditation with the UN Ambassador Tiruneh Zena,  and Commissioner  for the EHRC, said. If accredited,  EHRC becomes a member of the global network of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), bodies set up to promote, protect and monitor human rights in a given country. The International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of NHRIs determines the international accreditation status of national human rights institutions. A committee reviews the national human rights institution in accordance with the criteria set out in the Paris principles, which lists minimum standards required by national human rights institutions, to be considered credible and to operate effectively.  EHRC, whose activities were confined to Addis Ababa when it started five years ago, has now opened up branches in Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Makalle, Jimma, Gambella and Jijiga. It has also increased its  capacity from 20 experts to the current 200.
