National Aviation College, a centre for training aviation personnel is to be opened in Ethiopia.  A joint venture of National Airways of Ethiopia and Kenya Aeronautical College (KAC), it is to cater to the needs of the aviation industry which faces shortage of skilled manpower.
Abera Lemmi (Capt.), General Manager of National Airways, told Capital that the aviation college will start operation by providing the necessary training for people   who wish to become ticket sales officers, travel agents and cabin crew.
According to the General Manager, instructors will be arriving from Kenya for the commencement of   the initial stage and have plans for expansion and the provision of higher training.
“In the near future, we will have a degree level program in aviation science (a science dealing with aircraft operation and support systems which include aircraft maintenance, air traffic control and airport and airline management) with international accreditation. We will be certified by the Canadians,” he said.   “Currently negotiations are underway with universities involved in aviation to run joint programs here,” he stated.
The US based Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the Chinese Shenyang Aerospace University (SAU) are the two educational institutes linked to the talks.
According to Abera, based on the plan, aviation students will receive training in both local and international aviation institutions. “For higher level education programs (degree programs), students will be trained in these two stated universities,” he explained.
“If students get training based on International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard they will be marketable for international aviation industry,” Abera explained.
He said that to meet ICAO standards all instructors would be certified by International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The Nairobi based Kenya Aeronautical College, provides training and grants diplomas in aeronautical engineering, electronics/electrical, flight operations and dispatch plus cabin crew and travel and tourism courses. The Kenyan college is an internationally recognized body.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. It is the only fully accredited, aviation-oriented university in the world.
A university of engineering science and technology, the Chinese SAU has evolved, with many disciplines, but  its emphasis is on aeronautic and astronautic engineering, covering such diverse fields as science, technology, arts, economics, management and foreign languages.
SAU has actively and intensively developed its international academic exchange programs and cooperation. It has established cooperative arrangements with more than 30 universities and research institutions from different countries including Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Russia and the USA.
