Lucy to shine in Equatorial Guinea nation’s cup final


The Ethiopian national women’s side “Lucy” opens its group two opening match against Ivory Coast today. Sheik Mohammed Al Amoudi is to give away 5 million Birr to “Lucy” and has also made a mouth-watering promise of a two bedroom condo for each squad member if they book a place in the World Cup final to be held in Canada.
Destroying Egypt with a 6-4 score line followed by a 3-1 thrashing of Tanzania, there goes the Ethiopian national women side Lucy, for its third African Cup final appearance. Head coach Abraham T/Haimanot’s beauties are rubbing shoulders with the continent’s heavy weights in the 8th cup final taking place in Equatorial Guinea where eight nations battle for the coveted title. The Ethiopian Football Federation executive member, W/O Tiruwork Berhanu, heading the 23 squad member delegation, was seen off on Tuesday, after a gala dinner held at the Sheraton Addis where the 5 million Birr prize money windfall was announced for Lucy if they make to the World Cup final.
Lucy, in their 3rd Nations Cup final appearance, have placed fourth in South Africa, which is their best achievement so far, had been in intensive preparation for seven weeks, and after a 1-0 friendly win over visitors Kenya, are said to be ready to shake-up the group, dubbed as the death group, to reach the knock out stage. “We are ready to surprise everyone, including ourselves,” skipper Bezuhan Endale remarked, on her way to Bole International airport, while all-time top scorer Bertukan G/Kristos promised that they will all do their best to book a place and go all the way to Canada. Lucy opens the group match tomorrow by facing Ivory Coast; then they will have a decisive encounter against Cameroon on Wednesday,  followed by the last group final match against, six times African champion, Nigeria, on Friday.
