The construction of a Mental Health Centre would be launched  in Addis Ababa soon, said Dr. Dawit Assefa, General Manager of the Ammanuel Mental Health Specialized Hospital.  An annual planning workshop, focusing on identifying mental health problems and providing outpatient services, kicked off this week. Speaking on the occasion, the manager said the centre would address the issue of acute shortage of mental health professionals. He said, currently, only 90 mental health professionals are providing service across the country, of which 46 of them graduated recently with a Masters Degree, while the remaining 44 had been serving as psychiatrists. According to him, over 400 professionals were trained in the field of psychiatry in the past 20 years.
The hospital, in collaboration with higher education institutions, is offering first degree and short-term trainings aimed at upgrading the level of psychiatrist nurses, he said. He added that a plan has also been devised to widen the program at a national level, and that earlier, similar projects were implemented in five regional states and the Dire Dawa city Administration.
