Falcons peck Lucy thrice
After suffering two heavy defeats at the hands of Ivory Coast and Nigeria, the Ethiopian national women football team, popularly called Lucy, will meet Cameroon today in their third match. The today’s play is simply a formality to complete the Group B schedule.
Lucy conceded a 5-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Group B opener on Monday, October 29. Same day Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-1. On Thursday, November 1, the national side suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nigeria while Cameroon crushed Ivory Coast 4-1. The second national team defeat against Nigeria, whatever the today’s result may be, was an order to pack their bag for an early exit. Nigeria is on top of the group B with two wins, while Cameroon stand second with three points and Ivory Coast is third with similar 3 points but in goal difference. The bottom side Ethiopia is without a point and a goal.
Before their departure to take part in the 8th African Women’s Championship that takes place in Equatorial Guinea, the expectation was extremely high. But the first day 5-0 defeat poured cold water on that expectation.
Judging from their performance, both games were transmitted live on ETV, the national players didn’t play well in their first day match against Ivory Coast. Their physical fitness was by far below than their contender. But in the second day match against Nigeria in Bata, their ball possession was quite good but they had shown poor finishing capacity.
Well, qualifying for the continent’s big event is a good achievement but unable to score even a single goal and counting 8 goals against us in two matches is a disappointing end.
