On the night of November 8, 2012, the National Theater was filled with the mesmerizing sounds of famous composers such as Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, and Feleke Hailu. The Yared School of Music Student’s Orchestra led by one of the best Spanish composers alive, Silvia Sanz, gave an outstanding performance; playing the music with great precision and passion.

Silvia, born in Madrid, began her professional career with the Chamber Orchestra of Madrid which she founded and conducted until 1999. She is now the official conductor and founder of Madrid’s Metropolitan Orchestra as well as the official conductor of the Madrid Youth Orchestra.
“This is really a historic moment; two ancient countries with rich musical heritages have come together tonight to present this wonderful collaboration. The diplomatic relationship between Ethiopia and Spain is very strong and these kinds of cultural exchange events are important to making it stronger,” said Tadelech Delecha, State Minister of Culture and Tourism.
Silvia, who volunteered to come to Ethiopia to work with the Yared School of Music’s Orchestra and to organize the concert, has conducted orchestras in famous venues around the world; in countries such as Italy, France, El Salvador, and Korea.
“We are very proud of this event; the orchestra has worked tirelessly to make this wonderful presentation. We hope to have more musical collaboration with the Yared School of Music and Spanish musicians in the future,” said Miguel Frenandez-Palacios, Spanish Ambassador to Ethiopia.
The concert was attended by a full house, some audience members stood in the isles to watch the presentation, because there were no more seats available. At the end of each performance the whole orchestra stood up and bowed; their response to loud bravos and applause.
