ERA implementing a 5-year Bridge Improvement Master Plan
The Ethiopian Roads Authority said it is implementing a five-year Bridge Improvement Master Plan that would help archive bridge information and service standards in the country since 2004 EC at a cost of more than 394 million Birr. Authority public relations head, Samson Wondimu, told Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) that the program would enable the nation to make 80 percent of the bridge dependable at the end of 2008 EC from the current 57 percent. He said Some 20 million Birr has been allocated in this fiscal year alone for the construction and rehabilitation of bridges. According to a national inspection carried out two years ago, there are close to 4,300 bridges in the country, he said. According to Samson, the Authority has set a short term plan to rehabilitate more than 640 bridges.
