The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA) awarded three consultancy companies and three construction companies, in recognition of their many years of dedicated and diligent work in the road construction sector of the city, on November 10th.
The award ceremony was held to mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the city of Addis Ababa, as well as the 14th annual AACRA employee and management celebration. The event was attended by more than 2500 people. Although some senior invited dignitaries failed to attend because sources say of the simultaneously held ‘Fourth Ethiopian Cities Week’ festival from November 10-17, 2012 in Adama city, 99 kms southeast of Addis Ababa.
Three consultancy companies: UNICONE (United Consulting and Engineering Company), Highway Engineers Consultancy firm (HCE) and Zewdie Eskinder (Eng.) consultancy firm were awarded trophy cups and certificates for their decade or more of contribution in remarkable road design and supervision work in the city of Addis Ababa.
Eight consultancy companies were given certificates in recognition of their work and also as encouragement for their present and future functions.
Fekade Haile (Eng.), General Manager of AACRA, told Capital that three companies from the construction sector were also given trophies and certificates for their outstanding work in the sector, they being the China Road and Bridge Construction Addis Engineering Private Limited Company, Enyi Construction PLC, and Varnero Construction PLC. In the latter’s case the recognition was given for decades of uninterrupted service. Three construction companies, MIRDOC Ethiopian Construction Company, HAZII Construction Company, and Sunshine Construction Company were awarded certificates in recognition of their work as well as tokens of appreciation and encouragement for their continued involvement in the city’s road construction sector.
In a related development AACRA inaugurated the 4.2 kilo meters General Wingate Bridge to Gojam ber Square asphalt concrete road – part of the Addis Ababa Ring road project on Saturday, November 17th under the auspice of Mayor Kuma Demeksa and attended by other high officials This inauguration means that three fourth of the Ring road project that is from Megenagna to Wingate Gojam Ber and back to Megenagna is now completed. Addis Ababa which is currently celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding had its first road construction project in the early 1900s with the construction of the Addis Ababa-Addis Alem-British Embassy road.
However it was not until the start of the 1920s that the primary mode of transportation, which used to be by the way of mules began to change and vehicles became regular occurrences on the streets.
