Ethiopia in death group @ CECAFA Championship

The 36th CECAFA Tusker Challenge Cup kicks off on the 24th of November, 2012.
The East and Central African Championship (CECAFA) draw shows Ethiopia in group one with top seed and defending champions Uganda. Ethiopia will be fielding its second team which has been called to camp at the Wabi Shebelle Hotel and has started training since Tuesday. The 2012 CECAFA Championship will be played out between12 sides drawn in three groups. Southern Sudan, the new member, joins the host nation and 16-time defending champions Uganda, neighbouring Kenya and 4-time champions Ethiopia in what has been dubbed the death group of the tournament. The only nation representing East Africa in the African Nations’ Cup final, Ethiopia, will be sending its second team to the tournament to allow the first team to begin preparations for the Continent’s biggest sports event. Uganda will also be excluding some of its veteran players to give young talents a chance to play at international level. In group two, we find Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and Tanzania rubbing shoulders, with Sudan the hot favourite to win the group stage and Tanzania expected to finish as runner-up.  Burundi is the dark horse or the wild card in this group. The remaining four sides, Rwanda, Zanzibar, Eritrea and the West African nation of Mali, who has been invited to play in the tournament, are in group three where Mali is the clear favourite with Rwanda the likely runner-up. It is to be remembered that the Eritrean players and officials, except the head coach, failed to return home, all looking for asylum in the then host nation of Tanzania. A total of eight sides will reach the knockout stage.
