The Ethiopian Women’s soccer championship kicks off the 2012-13 season at the start of December. The competition takes place at the zone level among 15 sides, in four groups, of which two groups hail from the capital Addis Ababa.
The eight teams from the Capital are drawn in two groups with the top seeds being Dedebit FC and defending champions Commercial Bank. In group “A”, where Dedebit spear heads the other three sides, are Ethiopian Coffee (back in the premier league), Insurance and the newly formed Electric women’s soccer club. With nine National team players, Commercial Bank leads the second group that comprises of the Defence Force, St. George and newly promoted Water Sport. The season’s opening match will be between the favourites Dedebit, with more than four national team players, including all time leading scorer both at club and national level, Birtukan G/Kristos, and the new comers Electric who are coached by the former “Lucy” assistant coach Theodros Ayele and his assistant Melese Seyoum
The Southern Zone has contributed three teams; from Arbaminch Town, Hawassa Town and Sidama Coffee, which is famous for producing so many talented young women. The eastern Zone provided four teams including Diredawa Town, the only team it has playing at national league level. Harar Brewery, Adama Town and Mugher Cement are the remaining three sides in the group. Diredawa town, the only side that took part in last season’s women’s premier league fixtures, is considered the heavy weight of the group due to its experience in the tournament and at the same time for being the home to football loving young talents.
