Ministry constructing Rib and Gidabo irrigation dams
The Ministry of Water and Energy said it has been undertaking the construction of Rib and Gidabo irrigation dams in Amhara, Oromia and Southern Nationalities, Nations and Peoples’ Regions at a cost of 1.6 billion birr. Ministry public relations and communications director, BezunehTolcha, told Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) that upon going fully operational the dams will develop 26,000 hectares of land. The Rib dam, being constructed in Ebinat and Farta woredas, Amhara State, with an outlay of 1.3 billion birr will have a capacity to hold 234 million cubic meters of water. Upon going fully operational in the coming month of June, the dam will develop 14,000 hectares of land and benefit more than 28,000 households, he said. Similarly, the construction of the Gidabo irrigation dam, being undertaken in Oromia and Southern Nationalities, Nations and Peoples’ Regions will hold 117.8 million cubic meters of water. Upon going fully operational, the dam will develop more than 11,900 hectares of land and benefit over 79,000 farmers. The construction of the dams is part of the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) to increase the use of medium and huge irrigation dams for agriculture. According to the GTP, the volume of land being developed through irrigation will be raised to 15.3 percent from the 2.4 percent in 2002 C.E.
