Trunesh wins Nijman-Netherlands road race

Olympic triple gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba wins the Nijman-Netherlands 15 km road race with Olympic marathon record holder Tiki Gelana coming behind. Kenyans dominated the men’s event.
In the 29th edition, one of women’s world great distance athletes and the event’s record holder Tirunesh, London Olympic gold medalist Tiki Gelana, Gelete Burka and Kenyan Betris Mutai dominated the race from the start and stayed until covering the first five kilometers in strong pace even a new record appeared possible. Later on, the pace slowed and eyeing each other until the 10km mark, where Tirunesh sped away solo leaving behind her contenders in surprise. Tiki managed to recover and try to catch up the lead. However, famous for her finishing pace Tirunesh stayed in front until crossing the finishing line more than a minute earlier than her compatriot who grabbed runner-up spot. Tirunesh clocked 42:01 while Tiki coming home in 48:09. Kenyan Mutai broke Ethiopian podium sweep finishing third in 48:52 followed by her compatriot Lucy Macharia.
In other athletics news Ethiopian Abebe Dinkesa takes the men’s African mountain race in Obudu-Nigeria while his compatriot Etenesh Diro takes the women’s crown. This is the third victory for Abebe Dinkesa who told his supporters that he will be back for his fourth crown. Etenesh, the head line of the event not only won the race but also set a new course record in her debut appearance. Abebe and Etenesh each pocket 50,000 Dollar prize money a wind fall for the newlywed Abebe Dinkesa.
