A five-year, 100 million US Dollars grant agreement was signed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Ethiopia, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and UNICEF. Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu, Minister of Health of Ethiopia, Donald Booth, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative to Ethiopia, signed the agreement to redouble efforts to prevent and control malaria in Ethiopia, notably in the most affected Oromia region. The grant from the United States and UNICEF supports Ethiopia’s National Strategic Plan for malaria prevention, control and elimination through the provision of life saving anti-malaria drugs, diagnostic kits and long lasting insecticide treated nets.
According to ENA, key interventions include the procurement and distribution of 11 million long lasting insecticide treated nets, which will protect 22 million people living in malaria risk areas, procurement of 12.6 million courses of Artemisinin- Combination Therapies (ACTs) for treatment, and 16.5 million multi-species Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and other anti-malaria drugs.
