Ethiopian Gelete Burka is back to her old tricks, taking race after race, in a storming finish. Gelete outsprinted strong rivals, compatriot Buze Driba and Kenyan Mercy Chorono, to win the 70th Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza, Elgobar in the women’s six km race.

Just a week after her breathtaking 10km win in Madrid, the 26 year old Gelete appears determined to continue impressing the athletics world. World junior 5000 meter champion Buze and Chorono took command at the early stages of the race, the Kenyan even taking the lead 18 minutes into the race. With Chorono changing into top gear leaving behind the others, Gelete managed to stay close before she decided for a final surge some 800 meters from the finishing line. Alone, and in style on the final home stretch, Gelete crossed the line in 22:53 some six seconds earlier than runner-up Chorono followed by her compatriot Cheptin. Ethiopian Buze settled for fourth place. The trophy for the junior men’s race, named after Olympic marathon gold medalist Ethiopian Mamo Wolde for his first of four victories in Elgobar 50 years before, went to Italian Lorenzo Dini. Spain’s Claudia Estevez won the women’s junior honors.
