AAU launches Chinese undergraduate program

The Addis Ababa University (AAU), in collaboration with the Chinese Confucius Institute, has launched the Chinese language as its regular undergraduate program.
At the launching ceremony, University President, Admasu Tsegaye (Dr.), said that mastering the Chinese language would aid in academic and research collaboration with Chinese universities.
He said, “The program helps to forge strong relationship among people of the two countries. Teaching the Chinese language began two years back with certification. Now, the University would offer training to 15 students in the undergraduate program.
He noted that preparations have been finalized to teach Amharic in the Chinese foreign language university.
Chinese Ambassador, Xie Xiaoyan, also said launching the Chinese language program in the oldest university is a reflection of the strong attachment between peoples and governments of the two countries. It helps to strengthen trade relations began 14 decades ago, he added.
He also said that understanding the language helps to entertain better social and cultural interaction.
The Ambassador donated academic books to students who area learning the Chinese language in the university.
