The Meles Zenawi Foundation establishing conference was held on Saturday 6 April 2013 at the Headquarters of the African Union in the presence of former
and incumbent African leaders, senior Ethiopian government officials, families of the late Meles Zenawi and invited guests.
During the establishing conference attended by presidents of Sudan, Djibouti and Uganda, Sudan donated 2 million dollars while South Sudan donated one million dollar for setting up the foundation. Djibouti also donates half a million dollar while Uganda offered to give 300,000 dollars for the donation.
Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn in his opening remarks said Meles is a mature leader who has worked out a clear direction for the Ethiopian nation to come out of poverty and dictatorship.
Proclamation No.781/2013 passed by the House of People’s Representatives in January 2013 approved the establishment of Meles’ Foundation. The Proclamation stipulates that the Foundation would have its headquarters in Addis Ababa and may have branch offices elsewhere as necessary.
According to the Proclamation, the Foundation is established in recognition of the lifelong struggle and sacrifice of the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi with a view to making Ethiopia a political entity founded on equality, unity and free will of its nations, nationalities and peoples’. It also considers Meles’ achievement in contributing to peace, development, good governance and democracy.
The foundation will build and administer a public park where the remains of Meles rest permanently. It will also set up a library where books written by Meles and audio video material about him would be kept properly for research, among others.
The foundation will collect, organize and make accessible the late PM Meles Zenawi’s researches and other documents. The library will be built with international standards so as to make accessible educational materials to the public and researchers.
